Digital Signage Screen Size & Resolution Guide (2026): Get It Right First Time

Choosing the wrong screen size or resolution leaves content that is unreadable, blurry or stretched. This guide covers the few numbers that actually matter so you buy and design correctly the first time.

Size by viewing distance

A rough rule: the furthest viewer's distance in metres times about 25 gives a sensible minimum diagonal in centimetres. Menu boards read close-up; lobby screens read across a room — size accordingly.

1080p vs 4K — which you need

For most single screens viewed from a normal distance, Full HD (1080p) is sharp and cheaper. Choose 4K when viewers stand close, the screen is very large, or you show fine detail like dense menus or maps.

Aspect ratio and orientation

Standard screens are 16:9. Design content to match, and never stretch a 16:9 image to fill a portrait screen — it distorts. Use portrait for narrow spaces and posters, landscape for menus and dashboards.

Design to the native resolution

• Create images at the screen's real pixel size for crispness
• Keep key text away from edges to avoid overscan cropping
• Use 'contain' fit to avoid stretching, 'cover' only when safe
